Eric Byrnes lined out to left field in his 1st at-bat Friday night and in the end felt good about his swing. Byrnes broke out of a monthlong slump with a homer and 2 RBIs, Dan Haren pitched 7 innings and the Diamondbacks beat Detroit 4-3 to hand the slumping Tigers their 5th straight defeat.

Micah Owings has made headlines with his bat. He can pitch as well. Owings threw 6 shutout innings as the Diamondbacks defeated the Rockies 4-3 Wednesday, extending their domination of the defending NL champions.

Struggling to find his command, Randy Johnson needed help for his 287th career win. Stephen Drew supplied it. Backed by Drew's 3 run homer, Johnson went 5 shaky innings and the Diamondbacks beat Colorado 8-4 Tuesday. The Big Unit (3-1) gave up 4 runs and 9 hits, striking out 4 and walking none.

Daryle Ward was so sure he would play in the majors that he practiced his signature as a kid. He could get several autograph requests after his latest big hit. Ward delivered a pinch-hit, 2 run double in the 8th inning, and the Cubs rallied again to beat the Diamondbacks 6-4 Sunday after the anticipated showdown between Carlos Zambrano and Randy Johnson got wiped out.

Alfonso Soriano's warming up, even if the weather is not. He looked like his old self Saturday and expects he's put his season long struggles behind him. The Cubs player had 4 hits, that included a go ahead double in a 6 run 7th inning, and showed some flair on the bases to help Chicago beat the Diamondbacks 7-2.
