Did You Know

 

• Did you know that the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Incas played a game similar to baseball as a part of religious ceremonies and fertitily ceremonies?

• As early as 1778 we find what is perhaps the earliest reference to baseball in America.  Revolutionary war soldier George Ewing wrote in a letter that they played a game of "base" while serving at Valley Forge.

• In 1839 Abner Doubleday, a student at the U.S. Military academy creates the first set of rules for playing organized baseball in his hometown of Cooperstown New York.

• In 1862 William Cammeyer builds the first enclosed baseball park. He charges 10 cents to watch the games. In doing so he unknowingly gave birth to the over the fence homerun

• In 1878 underhand pitching ace Al Spalding retires from pitching with 252 victories.  He then starts a sporting goods store

• In 1889 baseball officials settle on four balls for a walk, prior to this decision, as many as nine balls were required to take the free path to first base.

• In 1903, Ban Johnson moved the Baltimore Orioles to New York City. He called the team the Highlanders but this proved unpopular to the large Irish population. The team was re-named the Yankee-Highlanders and eventually shortened to the Yankees.

• In 1908 a man who is not a fan of baseball writes the timeless classic "Take me out to the Ballgame", his name was Jack Norworth and he was inspired by a group of true baseball fans of the New York Giants while riding on a subway car.

• In 1912 Ty Cobb is suspended indefinately for attacking a handicapped spectator, he claimed the spectator was questioning Cobbs ethnicity.

• In 1935 Babe Ruth plays his last game. he played for the Boston Braves, he goes out with a bang hitting three home runs on May 25 at Pittsburghs Forbes Field.

• In July 1967 a line drive by Roberto Clemente breaks St. Louis pitcher Bob Gibsons leg, Gibson somehow manages to make it back in time for the playoffs in dominant fashion. In the World Series against the Boston Red Sox, Gibson wins three games while striking out 26 batters and posting an ERA of 1.00.  The Cardinals win the Series

• In 1973 George Steinbrenner buys the New York Yankees from CBS for $10 Million

• In 1974 Lou Brock steals 118 bases setting an all time record
