Eric Byrnes lined out to left field in his 1st at-bat Friday night and in the end felt good about his swing. Byrnes broke out of a monthlong slump with a homer and 2 RBIs, Dan Haren pitched 7 innings and the Diamondbacks beat Detroit 4-3 to hand the slumping Tigers their 5th straight defeat.

Neither the Tigers or the Royals saw this sweep coming. Jose Guillen homered and drove in 3 runs, Gil Meche pitched 7 solid innings and the Royals beat Detroit 8-4 Thursday to complete another 3 game sweep of the Tigers.

Given the opportunity to decide, outfielder Jacque Jones' 1st choice might be to join the Marlins. That is what Jones, who the Tigers designated for assignment last week, informed an associate. For now, Jones has no control over his next destination.

Luke Hochevar is in the end starting to demonstrate why the Royals selected him 1st overall in the 2006 draft. Hochevar pitched 6 strong innings and Joey Gathright drove in the only runs, helping the Royals beat the Tigers 2-0 Wednesday and hand Justin Verlander his American League leading 7th loss.
