Cubs sign James Shields for 3 years 56 million.
Sign Ross and Gomes with team friendly deals.
Trade Wellington Castillo, Albert Almora and CJ Edwards to ATL for Justin Upton

Shields is definitely going to get 5 years and about 85-95 million.

It's still the same $ per year for Shields just less commitment time wise. Smarter for Cubs. Could throw in a 4th year option for 17m extra to entice him but I wouldn't want to sign him for anything longer than 4 years. Otherwise I'd trade a some young talent for Jordan Zimmerman.

Originally Shields definitely would want at least 5 years but I can see now him taking less time and jumping on the Cubs bandwagon. Hey, It could be like the NBA players all joining one team and taking pay cuts to try to win. Why not in Baseball? LOL

I hope they don't sign Gomes but if they sign Ross I can see them trading away Castillo. I hope they get Upton but I don't know if I want them to give up Edwards in the deal although I am sure that deal is pretty close to fair.

After the deal Lester just signed, you think Shields is going to sign for that?

I would love for all that to happen, but Ross and Gomes are the only one likely to happen with those premises. Shields at a discount still might take a contract of 4yrs 80 mil with an option for a 5th yr. The Upton trade would probably take another good prospect to get ATL to bite.
