Paul Washington at SB Nation suggested that the Cardinals would be an ideal companion if a third team got involves in a deal that would see Giancarlo Stanton eventually end up in St Louis. While his trade was more complex, this one may be more suitable to all three teams. A trade may look like this:
-Cardinals get Giancarlo Stanton and CC Lee
-Marlins get Oscar Taveras, Lonnie Chisenhall and PTBNL (Luke Weaver) when he's eligible after the one year signing period from his draft day.
-Indians get Carlos Martinez and Stephen Piscotty
The bundle that the Cardinals give up is big, but not bigger than Giancarlo Stanton patrolling RF for the Birds for at least the next three or four years.
The acquisition of the two Cardinals prospects along with a good hitting and improving ML level 3B adds quite a bit to the Marlins depth and talent.
The addition of Martinez and loss of CC Lee is little more than a wash, however, the Tribe's target, the addition of Stephen Piscotty, improves the Indians OF situation in RF where they need the help the most. Less of a log jam in the OF for the Cardinals also comes into play, but, at a cost of their top prospect.
That is a price most teams would happily pay for the services of a player of Giancarlo Stanton's ability. When evaluating a trade. the first step is determine who gets the first and second best players (right now) in the trade. It's a no contest, the Cardinals do. The Marlins get the second best player right now. and the rest are almost all first year ML'er and prospects.
Thoughts?
1.) Not even enough for Stanton. Cardinals have so much in the minors. There's really no reason the Indians to be in the trade.
2.) Not going to happen. Stanton is under control for two more years and they get can get a lot more then what this trade offers. More proven talent anyway. So far Traveras has struggled although he should be good in time, Chisenhall is a one hit wonder so far and he has tailed off to a. 220 hitter second half, and is poor defensively. This is the second worst post on here today.
3.) Stanton will not be dealt period the end
The Indians would be more likely interested in giving up a prospect in lieu of cash. A bullpen arm (CC Lee?) or a Lower Level player (Lake Country Captains Level A-) with some upside. A group of two or three (Eric Haase or Alex Levisky) to select from by a specified date.
An additional exchange of prospects may be possible as well. Perhaps both teams will get a winning lottery ticket.
When a team like the Yankees doesn't have the prospects they need to complete a deal, they use other avenues to achieve the same end. One of those avenues could include the participation of a third team who can provide the Phillies with a TORP type prospect that the Yankees clearly do not have. The Yankees get to pay for that TORP addition to the third team with rostered players and / or cash and other prospects.
This first step, makes it possible to have further discussions about Cole Hamels. it doesn't complete a trade.
The McCarthy deal you've provided at the value you've indicated is unlikely.
The good starter seems to be missing from the return on any of the four parts of your deal.
Other than throwing with his left arm, why would anyone want anyone want Tom G?. and
Emilio Bonifacio is okay. he's much better than all the utility guys currently on the roster.
Missing on the # 1 priority. makes your offseason a fail.
Long contracts to players on the wrong side of 30 ALWAYS ALWAYS end up badly for the team signing them. There is no doubt that Nelson Cruz had a great season and continues to have a great 2014.
Can you say the same thing in five or six years when he'll be 40 / 41? Simply stated, there is no way that he will be able to produce at that level. That is indisputable. Hence the comment about being on the wrong side of 30. and not by just a little bit.
And that's the kind of deal he'll be asking for. DH or not, four to six years at HUGE $$. The Orioles were fortunate to get him on a one year $ 8 MM deal he signed. but that meager contract means he's going to get paid this time. You are correct. it's not brain science and certainly not rocket surgery. (call that a mixed metaphor).
There are some elements of what you've presented that make sense. The Nelson Cruz/JJ Hardy signings are going to be long contracts and big dollars. Both guys are on the wrong side of 30, so, it's not a strong likelihood Jack Z would go there. The resigning of Beimel. is a good idea. getting another guy like him, is a better idea. The Steve Souza idea could be two birds with one stone type thing. The Washington Nationals have only a couple of needs. A bullpen arm and a second baseman. Let's try this deal out:
The Nats offer Steven Souza and Sammy Solis for the Mariners' Ketel Marte and Brandon Maurer.
So, it's M & M for S & S. thoughts?
