Milwaukee trades Chris Carter.

1.) 26 May 2016 06:25:24
Why do the Brewers do this.

2.) 26 May 2016 12:31:20
I think the Brew Crew can get more for Carter right now.

3.) 26 May 2016 14:14:56
TOR Doesn't need Carter.

4.) 26 May 2016 15:14:10
Chris Carter is worlds better than Justin Smoak. So yes, Toronto could use Chris Carter.

5.) 26 May 2016 17:53:59
Smoak is slashing .278/ .391/ .417 with an .807 OPS right now.

6.) 26 May 2016 19:53:26
^thats just a small sample size. It proves he's doing ok right now, but where will he be in a month or two and at the end of the season.

7.) 27 May 2016 00:18:15
You're talking about a guy who has been barely above replacement level his entire career.

Carter isn't that great, but he's far better than Smoak. The Blue Jays would be morons if they don't see Carter as an upgrade.

But based on what they spent for mediocre pitching, I'm not so sure they aren't.

8.) 27 May 2016 13:42:33
Id take Smoak over Carter anyday of the week. Carter has crazy power but strikes out way to much. that's too much of what the blue jays have right now. Smoak is getting on base at a high rate, has been steadily producing after getting the starting job, and plays good defense.

9.) 27 May 2016 14:53:04
The fact that people are arguing over Smoak and Carter is hilarious and sad since both aren't that great. The are possibly better first baseman that are available out there.

10.) 27 May 2016 15:35:29
You Blue Jays fans make me laugh.

Smoak strikes out a lot as well, 28% of the time, in fact. He's got the second worst K rate on the Blue Jays right now.

He's also a negative DRS defender, so saying he plays good defense is a joke.

In short, if I'm going for a 1B that strikes out a bunch and plays poor defense, I'm going with the guy that at least has has some power, which Chris Carter leads all 1B in.

11.) 27 May 2016 15:36:25
And Batman, that there are people who think Justin Smoak is a good 1B is laughable.

Maybe I forgot to convert the stats into Canadian metrics?

12.) 27 May 2016 17:50:46
Justin smoaks ops+ this year 122
Last year 107
Chris carters ops+ this year 124
Last year 102

Chris Carter k% 39% this year
Carters had 212 ks in 2012
Had 151 in 391 abs last year

Justin smoak 34%
Justin smoak after becoming the starting 1st basemen 24%
86 ks in 328 abs

Fielding
 Smoak
In 1012 chances he has 4 errors in the last 2 years .996 fielding percentage
Has 1 drs in the last 2 years

Carter
Has made 11 errors in 1386 chances .992 fielding percentage
-5 drs in the past 2 years

Walks
Justin Smoak has 19 walks this year works out to a .386 OBP

Chris Carter has 15 walks and a .297 OBP

HRs
Chris Carter has 37 homeruns in the past 2 years with 556 abs

Justin Smoak has 21 homeruns in 450
Has more then 100 less Abs the Carter but still has put up 21 homeruns not to mention a .252 batting average over the last 2 years while Carter has .221. Saying that Chris Carter is "worlds" better then Justin Smoak is purely nonsense.

13.) 27 May 2016 18:16:40
zammer you don't get it. Your suggesting a sample size of this season is comparable to an entire season. Anyone who plays for the Blue Jays has inflated offensive numbers. You thinking Carter is a suitable upgrade for Smoak is hilarious.

14.) 27 May 2016 18:44:59
No i am saying that he isn't a good replacement for smoam because i clearly show that Smoak has been better both offensively and defensively.

15.) 27 May 2016 18:45:40
Also with almost all of my numbers i looked over the last 2 years.

16.) 27 May 2016 20:34:01
Three seasons worth of stats:

wOBA:
Carter- .337
Smoak- .314

wRC+:
Carter- 114
Smoak- 99

fWAR:
Carter- 2.8
Smoak- 0.8

ISO:
Carter- .259
Smoak- .184

Defensive metrics:
DRS:
Carter- -3
Smoak- -3

UZR:
Carter- -1.3
Smoak- 2.8

So you got me on defense, he's better than Carter (although saying he's "good" defensively is still a monstrous joke) .

As far as offensive numbers, he is no where near Carter in any offensive metric. Nowhere close. All of those numbers are independent of plate appearance totals, so the difference between PAs is moot.

Carter is the significantly better first baseman. It's not even a remotely close argument.

17.) 27 May 2016 20:40:41
In case you aren't convinced, more advanced stats:

WPA (win probability added, context neutral) :
Carter- 1.00
Smoak- -1.51

RE24 (run expectancy, context dependent) :
Carter- 18.59
Smoak- -1.79

WPA/ LI (win probability added, considering leverage index) :
Carter- 2.17
Smoak- 0.95

Again, this is over the span of three years. Carter is worlds better.

If you still aren't convinced, you're definitely a Blue Jays fan.

18.) 27 May 2016 20:54:26
That last WPA/ LI number for Smoak is wrong. It's NEGATIVE 0.95, not positive. Meaning he's costing his team runs in high leverage moments, not adding runs.

19.) 27 May 2016 23:12:34
You went three years back because that is when Carter had a career year. Over the course of last year and so far this year Smoak has been a better firstbasmen. I think neither of them are the same player they were 3 years ago, and they are both trending in opposite directions.

20.) 28 May 2016 01:03:18
No, I went back through 2014 because it gave me 2 full seasons + a quarter (this one), which is a better gauge for who the better player is.

You're also looking at Smoak with a .394 BABIP, which will not, under any circumstance, continue this season. He's literally batting 130 points higher than his career BABIP, which elevates his numbers early on.

This is why you can't use small sample numbers to make your case. Smoak has as many PAs through last year as Carter all last year (exact amount, actually) . That .394 BABIP is unsustainable and really lifting his numbers.

21.) 28 May 2016 01:57:55
Okay i'm gunna hold you to it. At the end of the season we will compare numbers and see who is better.

22.) 28 May 2016 07:04:18
If Smoak maintains a .394 BABIP or anything remotely close to it, I'll eat my hand.

23.) 29 May 2016 05:33:06
I predict you will not have to eat your hand. In the end we will all forget about this ridiculous conversation.

14 May 2016 23:11:23
Maybe trout for harper.

1.) 15 May 2016 00:57:22
What purpose would that serve?

2.) 15 May 2016 02:34:33
Everyone needs to stop. Just stop.

3.) 15 May 2016 05:09:24
maybe no?

07 May 2016 14:47:31
Tor and Was
Dalton Pompey, R. A Dickey and Josh Thole for Stephen Strasburg
Tor and Atl
Darrell Ceciliani for Tyler Flowers.

Leafs4win

1.) 07 May 2016 16:54:45
So how long did you think about this before you posted it? Because there is no way the Nationals accept this for Strasburg. Its very laughable and they would surely hang up right away. Also why would the Nationals trade him if they are expected to be in contention for the year? I know he's a free agent at the end of the year, but they shouldn't and probably aren't going to trade him.

2.) 07 May 2016 21:26:27
Quit this is awful.

03 May 2016 01:46:42
Blue Jays and Angels

Blue Jays get Geovany Soto, and Greg Mahle

Angels get Jesus Montero, R. A Dickey and Josh Thole.
