Mets manager Willie Randolph called a closed-door meeting in response to the latest remarks by closer Billy Wagner, who mentioned Friday he was being critical of the media, not his teammates. With the Mets off to a 20-19 start following last September's collapse, questions about Randolph's future have come up on talk radio and in newspaper columns, even though it reportedly has not been a topic of debate in the exec suite.

Pedro Martinez had taken a significant step toward rejoining the Mets' rotation yesterday by throwing a 55 pitch simulated game in Port St. Lucie. Martinez threw all of his pitches without problem and even fielded a bunt, giving the Mets hope that the 3 time Cy Young winner maybe back in the majors at the end of this month or early June.

It turns out that 2 of baseball's richest teams, the Yankees and the Mets, and a team nearer to the bottom of the revenue pile, the Royals, play in stadiums with some of the best inspection records.
