Ryan Dempster called Greg Maddux a mentor and showed he found out some lessons. Dempster struck out a career high 12 and hit a go ahead single against Maddux during a 4 run 5th inning, leading the Cubs over the punchless Padres 4-0 Thursday.

Forget Jim Edmonds. If the Cubs would like to go after a San Diego player who can make a difference in a World Series push, maybe they should be looking at Greg Maddux. Whether the Cubs would have given the Padres the right package to get the 350 game winner is at least a dice roll.

Ted Lilly has located his strikeout pitch, and Alfonso Soriano has found his batting eye and power. It was a strong combination Wednesday night, one that led the Cubs over the Padres 8-5. Lilly fanned 11 in 6 innings to get his 3rd straight triumph and Soriano had his 2nd leadoff homer in as many nights.

Shawn Estes had some serious doubts if he was ever going to get his 100th career win. Khalil Greene hit a 3 run homer to help Estes reached that milestone and triumph his 1st game since 2005 with the Padres' 4-3 win over the Cubs Tuesday.
