Peter Magowan said Friday he will retire as the Giants' president and managing general partner at the end of this season, ending a 16 year reign that brought to San Francisco a new ballpark, Barry Bonds, a World Series and ultimately scorn for the team's position in the center of the baseball steroids storm.

Lance Berkman will ride this hitting tear he's on as long as possible. Same goes for Houston manager Cecil Cooper, who continues to be amazed by his club's gutsy play. Berkman splashed his major league leading 15th home run into McCovey Cove to break a 9th inning tie, helping the Astros rally past the Giants 8-7 Thursday for their 11th triumph in 13 games.

The guy who made the Giants by surprise came up with a most surprising home run against a pitcher who rarely surrenders them. Steve Holm entered the game as a defensive replacement at catcher, then delivered the largest hit of the day.

Barry Zito, demoted to the Giants bullpen last week, returns to the starting rotation without having made any relief appearances. Giants manager Bruce Bochy mentioned Zito will start Wednesday's game in Pittsburgh against the Pirates' Phil Dumatrait (0-1).
