Seattle Mariners

The Seattle Mariners covet Ken Griffey Jr. would like him as much as a loving mom would like to see her children on Mother's Day. Club President Chuck Armstrong would like the Reds outfielder desperately, would like him to inject excitement into the Mariners and boost attendance, because Armstrong knows Griffey is a deity in the Northwest.

Mariners officials downplayed a story Tuesday that suggested Ken Griffey Jr. would join the team shortly. Mariners president Chuck Armstrong was quoted in the story saying, "I think everybody in Seattle would like to see him retire in a Mariners uniform.

Kason Gabbard threw an eye high pitch at Richie Sexson. That was it for the Mariners 6 foot 8 1st baseman. He charged the mound, sparking a 4th inning brawl in Texas' 5-0 triumph over Seattle Wednesday. "I am 6 foot 8. He can hit corners at will", Sexson said. Surprise, surprise, The Orioles own the best record in the American League and the Seattle Mariners are in last place. Sure, the season is only in its 2nd week. The Mariners bullpen cannot afford to carry pitchers who cannot work more than one inning or pitch in back to back games starting on Opening Day. That is what Chris Reitsma and Arthur Rhodes heard from Mariners manager John McLaren, pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre and GM Bill Bavasi Wednesday, when the team sent both pitchers to the minor leagues. Reitsma (offseason elbow surgery) and Rhodes (elbow ligament replacement surgery) are most of the way back, however neither is in pre injury form. Both were asked to remain with the team, continue rehabilitation and see what happens.
