The Devil Rays are gone. Trying to reinvent itself, the perennial last place team officially shortened its nickname to simply "Rays" during a celebration that brought a crowd of about 7,000 to a downtown park Thursday night.

Jim Hickey was retained Thursday as pitching coach of the Devil Rays, 3 days after he pleaded no contest to charges of driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage.

A day after clinching a playoff berth, the Yankees started preparing reliever Joba Chamberlain for a heavy postseason workload. The 22 year old right hander pitched on consecutive days for the 1st time Thursday night, helping fellow rookie Phil Hughes beat the Devil Rays 3-1 to keep alive New York's slim expects in the AL East.

Nothing comes easy for the Yankees this season, especially against the Devil Rays. Jorge Velandia hit a grand slam for his 1st career homer and Dioner Navarro added a solo shot in the tenth inning to lift last place Tampa Bay over New York 7-6 and prevent the Yankees from clinching a playoff berth Tuesday.
