I like it. Would of been good for this yr

Cruz is going to be an albatross contract I get the feeling and his glove is terrible. How about still trying to work a deal with the Phillies for Marlon Byrd who could hit, is a RH bat, plays great defense, had great instincts and doesn't have much of a commitment tied to him?

There are some elements of what you've presented that make sense. The Nelson Cruz/JJ Hardy signings are going to be long contracts and big dollars. Both guys are on the wrong side of 30, so, it's not a strong likelihood Jack Z would go there. The resigning of Beimel. is a good idea. getting another guy like him, is a better idea. The Steve Souza idea could be two birds with one stone type thing. The Washington Nationals have only a couple of needs. A bullpen arm and a second baseman. Let's try this deal out:

The Nats offer Steven Souza and Sammy Solis for the Mariners' Ketel Marte and Brandon Maurer.

So, it's M & M for S & S. thoughts?

That's a lot of slaty for a mid-market team like Seattle to take on.

5.) 20 Sep 2014
Wrong side of 30? did you see what nelson cruz did this year?? Its a move that would put him at DH. It's not rocket science. joe Beimel resign for 2 yrs. Souza because he is young and would not lost a lot like like it would if we were getting Marlon Byrd.

Long contracts to players on the wrong side of 30 ALWAYS ALWAYS end up badly for the team signing them. There is no doubt that Nelson Cruz had a great season and continues to have a great 2014.

Can you say the same thing in five or six years when he'll be 40 / 41? Simply stated, there is no way that he will be able to produce at that level. That is indisputable. Hence the comment about being on the wrong side of 30. and not by just a little bit.

And that's the kind of deal he'll be asking for. DH or not, four to six years at HUGE $$. The Orioles were fortunate to get him on a one year $ 8 MM deal he signed. but that meager contract means he's going to get paid this time. You are correct. it's not brain science and certainly not rocket surgery. (call that a mixed metaphor).
